Wedding Garters are a Timeless
Tradition
Wedding garters are a
tradition that many people say is one of the oldest still being
practiced today. There are several stories that tell us how
wedding garters became popular and why they have remained
popular even today. Legend has it that hundreds of years ago
people believed that it was good luck to own a piece of a
brides wedding dress. The problem was that the brides dress was
ruined when her dress was ripped to pieces by the guests. This
is why brides began wearing wedding garters to bring good luck
to one particular guest as it was thrown out to the crowd.
Today the groom traditionally will remove the garter from
the bride’s leg and toss it to all the eligible bachelors for
good luck. The bride, in turn, throws her bouquet to eligible
women and that woman will be the next to marry. This varies
from the tradition of centuries ago. It used to be the bride
who would throw the garter to the eligible men. Because the
drunken guests would often try to forcefully take the brides
garter the groom would step in and take the garter from his new
wife to protect her. That is how the tradition changed to the
groom instead of the bride tossing the garter to the crowd.
Wedding Garters: Do You Want to Skip
it?
As one of the longest standing wedding traditions, wedding
garters are still very popular. Even so, many brides are
choosing to skip this tradition altogether. Often times a bride
does not like the idea of exposing their leg to all of the
wedding guests and will choose to take a different spin on the
tradition of wedding garters. If a bride is comfortable with
the longstanding tradition and wants to include it then it is
her decision.
For the uneasy bride, there are alternatives to the wedding
garter tradition. For her the garter is the blue that she needs
to incorporate the old tradition of "something blue" into her
celebration. She may choose to discretely wear the blue garter
without publicly displaying it. Guests will never notice nor
will they care that this traditions was omitted.
Another variation to the wedding garter custom is for the
bride to wear two garters, one to toss out and one to keep as a
memento. If she is wearing a garter that has been passed down
for generations she certainly won't want to give it away. She
may choose to wear one very high on her leg and the other
lower. She can carry out the tradition of tossing out her
garter without losing her keepsake garter. It won't even be
noticed that she has on two wedding garters.
Wedding garters will go on for many more centuries to come.
They are one of the longest standing wedding traditions. It is
a matter of personal choice as to whether or not the bride and
groom choose to carry on with this tradition. Even if she
doesn't toss out the garter it is a nice addition to her
collection of mementos from that wonderful day!
